introduction

OpenAI has released GPT-4, the latest version of the popular AI chatbot, ChatGPT. The much-awaited language model, sees a huge improvement in processing power as well as new functionality, which we have outlined below:

Longer Text

GPT-4 is incredibly advanced; it can take in and generate 25,000 words of text, which is approximately 8x more than its predecessor, ChatGPT, which was limited to 800 words.

As many ChatGPT users can testify, it can be quite frustrating when the application reaches its limit and stops functioning, so the increased capacity will be a welcome improvement for many.

Creativity

GPT-4 is now even better at coming up with new ideas and working together with users. It can help with creative and technical writing projects like writing songs, making a script for a movie, or adapting to a user’s writing style.

Visual Input

“It can understand images and present logical ideas about them. For example, it can tell us that if the strings in this image were cut the balloons would fly away”

It’s even smarter than before!

OpenAI has been working on developing language models such as GPT, GPT-2, and GPT-3 through their research, and with the help of more data and computation have been able to make them even more advanced and capable.

In comparative tests, GPT-4 significantly out-performed ChatGPT on advanced placement tests and the SAT school exams. An example of this would be the US Bar exam; where ChatGPT scored in the 10th percentile and GPT-4 scored in the 90th percentile.

While it is no doubt smarter than its predecessor, GPT-4 still has some of the significant limitations of AI. One of those limitations is its tendency to “hallucinate,” which means it can create imaginary information and present it as if it’s true.

OpenAI says that although GPT-4 scores 40% higher on tests that measure hallucinations, “Great care should be taken when using language model outputs, particularly in high-stakes contexts, with the exact protocol (such as human review, grounding with additional context, or avoiding high-stakes uses altogether) matching the needs of a specific use-case.”

When will it be available?

Initially, the GPT-4 will only be available to those that have subscribed to ChatGPT Plus, which costs $20 a month, and as an API for developers to build applications and services.

It is, however, being used by Microsoft’s Bing search engine and has been used by the following companies:

  • Duolingo uses GPT-4 to deepen the conversation on their platform
  • Stripe leverages GPT-4 to streamline user experience and combat fraud
  • Morgan Stanley wealth management deploys GPT-4 to organise its vast knowledge base.

Conclusion

The latest upgrade to ChatGPT, GPT-4, promises to deliver an even more superior AI experience for its users. With enhanced capabilities in creativity, collaboration, and accuracy, GPT-4 is set to revolutionize the way we interact with AI chatbots.

While it still faces limitations and challenges, OpenAI continues to innovate and improve its technology to overcome these obstacles.
