introduction

Microsoft’s new Bing and Edge products have helped them reach over 100 million daily active users, since their launch a little over a month ago.

In a recent Bing blog, Yusef Mehdi, Microsoft’s corporate vice president, explained that they have been listening to user feedback and have been acting on it. They have implemented a number of updates and plan to continue a cycle of feedback and iteration.

He explained “we are pleased to share that after a number of years of steady progress, and with a little bit of a boost from the million+ new Bing preview users, we have crossed 100M Daily Active Users of Bing. This is a surprisingly notable figure, and yet we are fully aware we remain a small, low, single digit share player. That said, it feels good to be at the dance!”

He went on to share these key learnings:

  • Of the millions of active users of the new Bing preview, over a third a new to Bing
  • They are seeing engagement growing as more users are conducting daily searches
  • Approximately a third of daily users are using chat daily, with an average of 3 chats per session
  • They have seen an astonishing 45 million total chats since the Bing preview was launched a little over a month ago.
  • There has been an uptake of people using Bing on their mobiles via the new Bing mobile app. The app includes voice input, which has led to a 6X increase in daily active users.

There is not doubt that Microsoft‘s Bing and Edge have made some huge strides in just over a month since their launch.  In this time they have reached over 100 million active users and have seen impressive numbers in terms of user engagement and in the adoption of new features.

Although Microsoft seems to have gotten a headstart on their great rivals, it is still very early to say whether Bing can overtake Google as the king of search.  Google still holds over 90% of the UK search engine market, so toppling this giant won’t be easy.

Nevertheless, the progress that Microsoft has made with Bing is impressive, and it seems they are not slowing down anytime soon. We look forward to seeing how they continue to innovate and improve in the months and years to come.
